MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK !

NOTE TO GALE OUR CLEANER. . .   Could we have some more soap please !
(And sorry about the messy sink!!)

If there's one thing we have learnt so far it's PREPARATION !  When you start a garden from scratch it's not as easy as steps one, two, three.  We found out there is also steps four, five, six, seven, eight . . .

BUT  THERE'S  NO  STOPPING  US  NOW. . .

JUST  LOOK  AT  ROOM  ONE  GO!

BUT  WAIT  THERE'S  MORE. . .

WE'RE GROWING CHILDREN AT KARETU SCHOOL !

This is a particularly strong and healthy variety called Kirk, Tawera and Levi.
They are nearly ready to harvest !

SEEDS  SEEDS  SEEDS  SEEDS  SEEDS   SEEDS   SEEDS

The children have been busy learning about how to plant seeds and they are looking forward to seeing them grow. Room 1 children have discovered some very creative and interesting ways to watch their seedlings grow. They have used recycled tea bags to germinate their seeds. Also the bean seeds are planted in plastic cups so they can see the roots growing. The children are fascinated watching the progress.

Teina, Steven, Tia Pounamu, Amy, Maketu & Kyryn show off their bean planting experiments.
Andrew & Sammi enjoyed planting their seeds.
How many cups of tea has Ms Richardson had lately?
 "Lots!" they all shouted.

Room 1's impressive seed planting display.

Room 2 have planted lettuce and silverbeet seeds.
We have used recycled pots that can be planted straight into the ground.

Sunflower children (and a puppy!)

MEANWHILE  IN  THE  BACK  &  BEYOND  OF  ROOM  2  . . .

In between the rain downpours we have been positioning the recycled tyres and filling them with our homemade compost. The koru design looks fantastic.

Our BEFORE photo . . .   room for improvement !

Where's Kirk?
Muscle Men!

Patrick & Melissa love the design.

Good job guys we are finally ready to plant.

WORMS WORMS WORMS WORMS WORMS !

Room 2 measuring 6.7 metres.

We just had to make a 6.7 metre worm! We call him Wilbour.

WE  LOVE  WORMS !!

As you can see we have been studying about worms and we looked at how worm farms work. The children found out that worm pee is extremely good for the garden and helps to grow healthy vegetables.

WE WANT ONE !!

So, we challenged the children to put their thinking caps on. Their mission . . . .     to design and build a prototype worm farm that would be sustainable, creative and would effectively collect worm pee.
